This Week in Sports: September 11 – September 17

Week one of the NFL, a great college football matchup, and an intriguing MLB matchup all headline the week of September 11 – 17.

Sept. 12 – This should be an interesting first Monday Night Football game as the Patriots play at the Dolphins. Tom Brady looks to lead the Patriots to another Super Bowl run, and if offseason acquisitions in Chad Ochocinco and Albert Haynesworth can play like their old selves they should have a fairly decent chance. The Dolphins on the other hands are giving the reins to Chad Henne for the full season, and it will be interesting to see how he performs in such a difficult division.

Sept. 12 – The second part of the Monday Night Doubleheader may not be as interesting to east coast football fans as much as west coast ones, but football is football, right? The Raiders are one of those teams where it could go either way for them, in that they could have a really good season or another mediocre one. The Broncos on the other hand look to rebuild with the recent addition of John Fox as their head coach.

Sept. 17 – This college football game will be a real test for either team to see if they can truly make a run at a BCS Championship in the 2011 season. The Sooners were picked by many as the favorite going into the season, with the Seminoles being a dark horse. The real test in this matchup will be Oklahoma’s offense vs. Florida State’s defense; whichever outlasts the other should win the game.

Sept. 13 – If the White Sox are going to have any chance at making the playoffs in the 2011 MLB season they will have to sweep the Tigers and hope Armageddon happens or something. The White Sox have really been under-performers this year, as it was thought the addition of Adam Dunn and the healthy arm of Jake Peavy would surely lead them to a division title. The Detroit Tigers on the other hand has had a boost from pitching phenom Justin Verlander, who goes for his 23rd win on September 13.
