Nadine Dumas: Q&A Feature

How and when did you get started in training and living a fit lifestyle?
I would say I started late, I played some sports in school but also started working for an accounting firm when I was 16 years old, so honestly, the fitness side of things just wasn’t something that peaked my interest. It wasn’t until I was 25 that I really became serious about training and living a fit lifestyle. I had just moved down to the Cayman Islands and started going to a local gym where a number of people were training for a fitness competition. I attended the show and I guess you could say I was hooked ever since.

What got you started in the fitness industry?
It was the fitness show that initially sparked my interest. From there, I just wanted to learn as much as I could about it all, so, I started competing and studied to coach others in the industry. I fell in love with the lifestyle and started helping educate others about their own health and wellness.

Along your fitness journey, have you ever felt like quitting… and if so what/who motivated you to keep going?
From a work standpoint, absolutely. I started in this industry over 8 years ago and you constantly have to be forward thinking and always one step ahead. When I quit my corporate job, I also lost that security blanket, I knew my hours, I knew my pay, my job started at 9 and finished at 5. With starting my own company , none of those were there anymore so the stress of the unknown I would say was the hardest part. What always kept me going was my son and my clients. I have a little boy and taking the leap to start my own company has enabled me to be at home with him. He motivates me to work harder so that we can have that time a lot are unable to have with their children. I feel very fortunate. I have also had the pleasure of coaching some of the most amazing individuals, and seeing their success is what motivates me to continue to do what I do.

What types of cardio have worked best for you?
I have a great coach that programs my training for me. Even with being a coach, its always beneficial to have someone to coach you. You are able to learn, grow and have your butt kicked all at the same time! My programs do not consist of cardio such as running on a treadmill or using the elliptical but instead he has me sprinting, doing speed work or some type of alactic training. I have a love-hate for it!

What supplements do you use… and what are some of your favorites you would recommend?
I use all Cellucor products and have quite a few favorites. The CLK is great. especially for women as it targets the tummy area. I love the Alpha Aminos; its very hot on the island and I train at a gym with no doors or A/C so this helps keep me hydrated. The NO3 and the C4Ripped I use daily. Cellucor makes some of the best protein powder flavors and the Red Velvet Cake Batter I would have to say is at the top of my list.

When you look back what do you think has been the key to achieving your goals?
Consistency. Being in the industry for quite some time I have seen it grow immensely. It can be very easy to follow suit and find yourself going down a path you are not comfortable with or believe in. I take a lot of pride in always standing my ground and remaining consistent even if that means it will take a bit longer to get there, but for me, the reward comes from knowing I stayed true to my goals.

What’s one tip you would give to a person just starting their fitness journey?
Trust the process. I see far too many people give up on themselves way too quickly. Its called a journey for a reason, there are going to be setbacks, and bumps down the road but that is only what will make you stronger and know how to handle them as you start to incorporate fitness into your lifestyle. Its also very important to be realistic with yourself when it comes to starting your fitness journey. Figure out what YOU are able to commit to, not what someone else is able to commit to. We all have different lifestyles and priorities. As soon as you can set this for yourself, stick to it and remain committed.

What’s next for Nadine Dumas?
I plan to continue building my brand and my websites, as well as get more involved in events which I can help motivate and inspire others to lead a healthy lifestyle. I have a lot of travel coming up for the remainder of the year that will keep me on my toes, but I love it. Hopefully I can squeeze in there a non-work related vacation. We will see!\
